I am just simply amazed at what some people will just give away. Granted by giving this thing away they got someone else to lug it down 3 floors with TINY stairs...but hey. IT will serve us well for many years and didnt cost a penny. Just the time and gas to get it home. (yet another reason i am glad i bought my truck!)
Most of Noah's toys and a good hunk of his clothes are all second hand. So it may look like we spoil the crap out of him, but really we only spent enough to get a few toys but got dozens instead!
I love it, i have met some cool people along the way as well .But i still stay cautious when dealing with someone new...you just never know...
Growing up I had a major problem with second hand because my weathy father was so stingy that he'd bring home any ol' crap and.... well if I start ranting now, you'll be reading all night. HOWEVER in a case where money is an issue, and where you get second hand responsibly, I think it's a great idea!!!! :) Also, I know dang well, you're only going to get good stuff for Noah.
Funny story. My Grandma is 90 years old now, and te family wants her to have a bedroom downstairs, so she won't have to worry about the stairs. The family legend was Grandpa's Treasure Room, the one room of the house that looked like the pilot episode for Hoarders. LOL When Grandpa died, the stuff mysteriously disappeared, and now Grandma is getting a pretty new bedroom. :) He would bring home all kinds of stuff, useful, crappy, new, old, good condition, broken.... Atleast you and Katie have standards! :)
Your dream sounds awesome!! One way in which you are lucky is you can make money with your computer, but also with your hands, when you're not on the computer. With our circumstances, Walker and I are kinda confined to our computers, but we do alright. We're hoping to get some major promoting of our books done. I got a bright idea for promotions, and wrote about it in a blog entry on our publishing site www.twoguelphauthors.webs.com where I also pasted a copy of the item I created into the blog post. :)
Funny story. Walker's 3rd wife Mary, mother of their almost 22 year old son, was raised by her Grandmother, who raised children during the depression. One of the things that Mary learned early on ws that if there's food on the table, eat it lickety-split, before someone else does!!! As a result, Mary can and WILL eat any food that's not nailed down, in about 5 minutes flat.
One day she visited us in AZ, to bring their son out. Walker made a LOAD of ribs on the BBQ. I was raised with the idea that you take what you can eat, and if you want more take seconds, but eat EVERYTHING YOU TAKE!!! I took a modest portion, and Walker and Cory BOTH warned me to take ALL I wanted that they weren't going to last. It's a good thing I did, because when Mary saw that plate they were G O N E in a heartbeat!!! Amazing how the Depression influences the generations. Fortunately Cory does not take after his mother.
There is a lot of people saying that the recent recession will plague our collective psyche for a while as well. The idea of never being secure and so on. I can see it too...i have changed drastically since then. I was once the stereotype American consumer, now i am a pack rat saver. You have to wonder how much of an effect that can have on a consumer driven economy when millions of people start being frugal.
anywho, i am about to crash...I have a funeral to go to in the morning so i should be going to bed (great uncle, not close at all so not a huge thing)
so, goodnight, i had fun chatting. maybe we can pick it up tomorrow where we left off! another great thing about the internet lol
My financial foundation is based on my Dad's values, but like my mother and maternal grandparents, I DO have fun now and then, and don't take it to extremes.
Walker and I feel lucky to be on disability, because it's not going to get any worse. I believe that if people learned how to live within their means as the three of us have, they wouldn't have to work themselves to death. Nothing wrong with hard work, but there's no use going into major debt either.
I am glad the current situation gave you the wakeup call that you needed.
When I get to NYC I'm going to write my Dad a good long letter, and put it on Waldorf Stationery. I'm actually going to be landing there on his birthday!!! He's pissed off at me for a lot of things, including taking my mother's last name. I want to try and explain to him that while I refuse to allow him to control everything I do, that's not to say that I haven't learned A LOT from him. God knows, no one controlled everything HE did. He figured it out on his own, and it is no surprise that his daughter takes after him in that way.
Warm thoughts directed to you and your family member, at the funeral. For me that's one of the drawbacks to having so many older friends. I have been to way too many funerals, and now I'm married to a guy twice my age plus 5 years. Yeah, that kinda scares me, but one can't waste the present complaining about the inevitable.
Amen, about the internet. I love how we can put a conversation down like a novel, and pick it up the next morning. I also love how we're not doomed to socialize with the people in our tiny little area. I could tell you stories about my school years which will explane perfectly why I have older friends. LOL
Goodnight, sweet dreams, and good luck at the funeral.
