We don't have a carbon monoxide thingy, either, Lena. Guess we probably should, as we've got one of those "old fashioned" floor furnaces........but I've got a feeling in the next couple of years or so, we're going to have to get a brand new furnace.....sure do dread that.

Just make sure you are able to test it ok. We got a combination smoke / C.O. detector and it was really funky to test. I heard once that Weird Al Yankovic's parents were killed by carbon monoxide poisoning so we can't be too careful. I know the natural gas guys put that mercaptan stuff in the gas so you can tell when it is leaking but with C.O. it is often hard to sense it. Sometimes the cats can sense it though. We have a detector but my nose works better than those do, the gas co has been trying to fix a gas leak for about 3 years out here, I laughed and said, well you didn't get it yet, when it gets chilly out I walk out my back door and it about knocks me out. No one else smells it though.

Hey, they were working out front just four feet from the last three times they attempted to find the leak and I THINK THEY GOT IT THIS TIME!! Yay, I don't smell the gas when I walk outside.

I'm glad you got one. My family has always had one (I don't personally), and as I watched a lot of Rescue 911 growing up, I was really thankful. I can't remember how many episodes they showed of people suffering from that kind of poisoning. It really scared me as a child.

We've got one right by our heater - they're inexpensive and can save your life. The only warning you may or may not get before dying is a headache! So definitely yes, get those detectors!

The one in my old life saved our lives. The heat shield on the furnace had been installed incorrectly which caused dangerously high carbon monoxide levels. Had we not put in a detector, we would both have died. I have them upstairs and down here in my new life.
