Are the Worst Parents Really the Best?

I don't party either. But I have gotten drunk a few times in my life, before kids. And I tell the girls it is not a fun feeling. Still I do expect them to go out and drink when they hit 21. Gotta learn for themselves.

I went out and got totally smashed fro my 21st b-day cause it seemed like the appropriate time to do so...and that was enough

now...we do drink from time to time but we are responsible about it and use it to teach our children about being responsible...

Because, Roni and I were raised in an alcoholic family and are lucky enough to not be drinkers (they were smokers too and we never smoked either)

During our last trip home she even told me that she forgot how much our family drinks...

My oldest boy does drink. Nothing wrong with that as long as it is done responsibly. I drink every now and again to. Just not all the time. Nor do I do it falling down drunk. I fall down enough with my bad leg, I don't need any drink to help me.

If you know you raised your child right. Than be rest assured your child will do what is responsible. If she chooses to drink, hopefully there is a designated driver. That is a start of being responsible.

I never get drunk and I hate the taste of alcohol. So hopefully when I have kids someday, they won't be able to tolerate it as well. LOL
There is an MTV show called the Worlds's Strictest Parents. They find the worst kid to be placed into these parents homes for a few weeks. There were mixed results.

I think it really is peer pressure. I know that I drank as a young person because my friends were doing it. We thought it was fun. Today, I drink wine, mostly, but I am far more comfortable drinking at home than in any situation that would put me behind the wheel of a car. I hope your newly minted "adult" will always have a designated driver with them.

Nope, I'm not a drinker either. I didn't go out on my 21st birthday drinking either....

I never was into drinking. I tried it as a teen but it made me so sick, there was no way to get it near my nose, much less my mouth, after that!

Well, you have vented some of the anxiety that goes along with parenting. This world is a big place and when they become responsible for themselves they continue learning just as we did. The process. I'm not a drinker.I seen to many drunks while I was growing up and I chose not to be like that.I don't think my choice had anything to do with my parents.

The worst parents are more terrible than you can imagine.

I am not drinker and never have been even though my father was.

There's more to raising kids than just parenting, part of it is the childs temperament which will contribute to his/her desires.

My father is an alcoholic, self medicated with marijuana and worked a 80 hour job, him exposing me of alcohol and telling me how expensive it was, how he could have bought him a nice truck when I was a teenager, I listened. I didn't judge my father for his actions, but I didn't like the way alcohol made him grumpy sometimes or if he hadn't had alcohol all day he'd be irritable - he was never violent toward me, in fact he was what was called, a happy go lucky drunk. My dad explained to me growing up, that it's ok to do things in moderation, but don't overdo it like me! I rarely drink on occasion, but its maybe every 3-4 months or a special occasion. I currently self medicate with marijuana for anxiety and believe that marijuana can help many for medical purposes. I also think marijuana should be legal. My father taught me not to use any other drugs besides marijuana because hey can be very addicting unlike marijuana and have very serious side effects (he told me of one of his friends growing up that sold things to fulfill his addiction, he basically told me the truth about things, heretofore are consequences for everything you do. And he is right. My mother told me once, she is strictly not a weed smoker, that she'd rather see her daughters smoke at home than get in a car after drinking alcohol and get in a car crash. I do not drive if I have smoked, I either stay home or let someone else that has a valid license drive my car. That's just me. Some people drive after smoking perfectly fine, not speeding, relaxed etc, but I personal just don't feel comfortable with the idea. Good luck in what you tell your girls, if I were you I'd have a safe talk with them about it. always have a designated driver, etc.

The thing about our kids is they grow away from us, in their own way. And going out for a few drinks isn't the end of the world.

Btw, I did go out on my 21st bday and drink but I figured out in the bar that all people do (most people) when drunk is fight. I drink very little but just wanted a taste of what everyone bragged about. It's not like everyone makes it out to be.

Most young adults try out alcohol. The lucky ones don't like it or learn a lesson early on.

I did some drinking in my younger years, but then found that I was perfectly capable of making an ass of myself without chemical enhancement. Furthermore, without alcohol, there was no hangover or barfing and I had a lot more fun. Win-win!

Hey Jan, my high school buddy and I always told people we did not have to drink to act stupid. I was married at 20. When I suggested to hubby that he take me out drinking to celebrate my 21st, cause I knew he liked beer, he told me flat out that getting drunk was miserable and not so much fun like the television made it look.
